Knockdown Texture

Sprayed and troweled texture that gives concrete a slip-resistant profile. The standard for Florida pool decks because it stays cool and grips wet.

We install knockdown texture throughout Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Lakeland, plus Clearwater, Brandon, Riverview, Bradenton, Venice, Plant City and Winter Haven.

  • Slip resistant when wet, the reason it dominates pool decks
  • Stays noticeably cooler underfoot than plain concrete
  • Hides existing surface imperfections
  • Wide color range with a sealed topcoat
  • Repairable in sections down the road

How We Work

How We Do A Knockdown Deck

Assess & Mask

We look at the deck condition, then mask and protect everything that is not getting sprayed — waterline tile, coping, screen enclosure tracks, walls and landscaping.

Clean & Prep

The deck is cleaned and profiled. Old paint or a failed coating gets ground off completely rather than sprayed over.

Repair

Cracks chased and filled, spalled and hollow areas patched back to level. Texture will not hide a bad slab, so the slab gets fixed first.

Deck Mix Overlay

Our classic deck mix goes down over the existing concrete, troweled out to a consistent base. This is the layer that makes the finished deck one uniform surface instead of a patchwork.

Spray & Knock Down

The texture is sprayed on and then knocked down with a trowel to the profile you want — standard for most decks, heavier where there is slope or constant water.

Cool Deck System & Seal

Finished with a coat of our cool deck system in your colour. That is what makes it slip resistant when wet and noticeably cooler underfoot than bare concrete in a Florida summer.

Options

Knockdown Options

Standard Knockdown

Sprayed and knocked down with a trowel for a consistent low-profile texture. The default for Florida pool decks and the most common thing we spray.

Heavy Knockdown

A more aggressive profile with more grip. Worth it on steeper decks, ramps and anywhere that stays wet.

Colour Matched

Base colour plus an accent or antiquing pass. We put samples on your actual deck in daylight before anything gets ordered.

Borders & Bands

Contrast borders, banding and saw-cut detail to break up a large deck and define edges. Small cost, big visual difference.

Cool-Deck Colours

Light tones chosen specifically to reduce surface temperature. Matters more in Florida than almost any other design decision on a pool deck.

Pricing

What Drives the Price

Knockdown is priced per square foot and sits well below the cost of pavers or replacing a deck, which is a large part of why it dominates Florida pool decks.

Cost moves on square footage, the condition of the existing deck (cracks, spalling and old failed coatings all add prep), colour complexity (single colour versus accent and borders), and access — a deck inside a screen enclosure takes longer to mask, protect and work in.

Where knockdown genuinely saves money is that it goes over your existing concrete. No demo, no hauling, no re-pour, and your deck stays where it is.

Durability

How Long It Lasts

A properly installed knockdown deck runs 10 years or more with the sealer renewed every few years. The texture itself is cementitious and does not peel.

It is repairable in sections, which is its quiet advantage. Damage one area and that area gets patched and re-sealed rather than redoing the deck wall to wall. Coating systems rarely allow that.

Re-sealing is the whole maintenance story. Rinse it, keep it clean, re-seal on schedule. Chlorine and salt do not bother a sealed knockdown surface.

Signs You Need a New Deck Surface

Knockdown Texture Across Southwest Florida

Every knockdown texture job we do starts the same way regardless of which city it is in — an on-site look at the actual slab, moisture testing where it is warranted, and a firm written price before anything starts.

In Tampa and Hillsborough County we work everything from 1920s bungalow slabs in South Tampa to new-build garages in Westchase and New Tampa. Across the bay in St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, salt air off the Gulf and the bay changes what holds up, so exterior specs there always account for it. Down in Sarasota and Manatee County — Siesta Key, Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch, Venice — decorative and premium finishes make up most of the work. And in Lakeland and Polk County, larger lots, detached garages and workshop slabs are where high-build systems earn their keep.

Resin floor systems that bond into the slab and cure hard. A polyaspartic topcoat adds UV stability and gets you back on the floor in a day.

Concrete Staining

Acid and water-based stains that soak into the slab and react with it. The color lives inside the concrete instead of sitting on top, so it cannot peel or chip off.

Paver Sealing

Deep cleaning, re-sanding and sealing of brick and concrete pavers. Locks joint sand, stops weed growth and brings the color back.

Concrete Overlay

A cementitious layer troweled over existing concrete. Fixes spalling, discoloration and surface damage without tearing the slab out.

FAQ

Common Questions

Why is knockdown texture used on pool decks?

Two reasons. It is slip resistant when wet, which matters most right where people step out of a pool. And it runs cooler underfoot than bare or dark concrete, which matters in a Florida summer.

Does knockdown texture stay cool?

Lighter colors in a textured profile stay noticeably cooler than plain gray concrete in direct sun. Color choice makes a real difference — we will steer you away from dark tones on a deck people cross barefoot.

Can knockdown go over existing concrete?

Yes, that is the normal application. The slab gets cleaned, prepped and repaired, then the texture is sprayed and knocked down with a trowel.

Can knockdown texture be repaired?

Yes. It can be patched in sections and re-sealed, which is an advantage over systems that have to be redone wall to wall.
